Wall Street Journal Reporter Detained in Russia
Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, was detained by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) on Wednesday on an allegation of espionage.
The FSB alleges that Gershkovich was collecting information that could be harmful to Russia's national security. Gershkovich has denied the charges.
Gershkovich was detained while on a reporting trip to Yekaterinburg, Russia. He was reporting on the trial of a Russian citizen accused of spying for Ukraine.
The U.S. Embassy in Moscow has confirmed Gershkovich's detention and is providing assistance. The State Department has called for Gershkovich's immediate release.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has condemned Gershkovich's detention and called for his immediate release. CPJ said that Gershkovich was detained "solely for doing his job as a journalist."
Gershkovich's detention is the latest in a series of crackdowns on journalists in Russia. In recent years, several journalists have been killed, imprisoned, or forced to flee the country.
